I had some fun on the weekend. Inspired by a contact on Flickr, I decided to try my hand at doing some oil & water closeups. It was something different and actually pretty easy to set up. I just took a shallow glass baking dish with about an inch of water in it and added a bit of oil (in this case olive oil is all we had). I mounted the dish on some glasses to get it about 6 inches off the counter and used some coasters underneath to provide shape and color. It was hard to get them sharp with my cheap reverse macro filter on my 50mm lens, so I think a real macro lens or at least a set of extension tubes would work much better. It was still an interesting challenge and something I will probably try again at some point. The possibilities are almost endless and I can think of trying different mediums as well, maybe ice cubes or oil paint…
