Here’s a shot I took of some grasses on our hike in Indian Canyons. I enjoy taking shots with shallow depth of field, but it can be hard to make sure that your subject remains in focus when it’s only a matter of millimeters. In the case of something like this long grass, even the slightest breeze can spoil it.
For any beginner photographers out there, I recently found out about an interesting tool to help you learn how to move towards taking shots like this which are generally not possible if your camera remains in auto mode. Canon Outside of Auto is an interactive online tool that shows you what kind of changes you can make and what effect they will have on your photographs. Kinda fun and educational at the same time and could help you start using some of your camera’s other modes like Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and even full Manual.
